Online Paralegal Degree

Are you interested in completing an online paralegal degree? Some people like the idea of studying via computer-based training program because it allows them to dictate their own hours and pace of study.  There is usually more flexibility to complete the program within your own timescale. This is particularly useful if you  already have restrictions on your time perhaps because you are already working full-time or you may have young children who may not be in full time day care.

How do I know which online paralegal studies degree to choose?

There are many good online parallel paralegal degree programs available. Some offer qualifications on par with an associate level degree while others offer a certificate-based program. You need to know what level of qualification you will receive when you complete the program. It is also important that your course has been accredited by one of the legal organizations such as NALA, ABA or NFPA.

You do not have to complete an online paralegal degree in order to become a paralegal. If you have a bachelors degree in any field plus have at least six months relevant in-house training as a paralegal, you may find that you can easily secure position as a legal assistant. Even if you already hold qualifications, you should think seriously about completing the certified legal assistant program offered by the National Association Of Legal Assistants or the NFPA.

The certified paralegal examination has a minimum pass mark of 70% but you must achieve this in each of the five sections.  The exam lasts two days and only when you have successfully completed it can you use the title of CLA or CP.

Once you have passed the certified paralegal examination, you have the option to continue your studies by specializing in a particular field of law.   The advanced paralegal certification program is also offered by NALA and is worth considering if you want to earn the higher salaries available at the top law firms.

When looking at the syllables for your online paralegal studies degree program, always check that it meets the required syllabus for the recognized exams. It is pointless paying for a paralegal online degree program if it is not sufficient to prepare you to pass one of the various certification programs available. Don’t be swayed by the promise of a certificate on passing. Unless it is offered by either the NALA or the NFPA, it is not going to help you much in your chosen career.

Is it better to do an online associate paralegal degree?

There are many companies offering an online associates paralegal degree program which is not sufficient to give you the academic edge required for certain positions. Never base your decision on where to study on price alone. Always check the past examination performance of students who have completed that particular program. Some colleges will offer a job placement program as an incentive to get you to join their course.  But it is worth checking what type of positions they will secure i.e. could you find a similar paid position without having the addition expense of completing their course.

Do I need an online paralegal degree?

Don’t forget, that you do not need to complete any form of online paralegal degrees in order to become a legal assistant. However passing your paralegal certification exams will help secure a higher paid position and is something worth considering. If money is a consideration, you may want to check with your tax advisor as to whether you qualify for the various tax incentive programs designed by the government to help people return to work are achieved professional qualifications.  If you know you want to work as a paralegal and have an idea of the type of firm you want to work in, why not contact a couple of personnel officers in these firms and find out what type of qualifications they like to see on a resume.  Then you can make a more informed decision on whether an online paralegal degree is right for you or not.
